Saturday's Men's Basketball Results
Illinois State 75, Central Michigan 62
NORMAL, Ill. (AP) -Dinma Odiakosa had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Illinois State to its seventh straight victory, 75-62 over Central Michigan Saturday night.
Osiris Eldridge scored 13 points, Lloyd Phillips had 12 and Alex Rubin 10 for the Redbirds (7-0), who were 21-for-26 from the free-throw line.
Robbie Harman scored 18 points for Central Michigan (3-5). Marko Spica had 13 points and six rebounds for the Chippewas, and Amir Rashid also scored 13 points. Harman had five 3-pointers, the only ones of the game for Central Michigan.
The Redbirds led 37-31 at halftime and maintained the lead the rest of the way, with the Chippewas getting within 39-37 early in the second half. A 3-pointer by Phillips gave Illinois State a 10-point lead with just under six minutes to play.
Bowling Green 67, Fordham 46
NEW YORK (AP) -Dee Brown scored 14 points to help Bowling Green defeat Fordham 67-46 on Saturday night in the Rams' first game under interim coach Jared Grasso.
Fordham (1-5) fired seventh-year coach Dereck Whittenburg on Thursday, making Grasso the youngest head coach in NCAA Division I this year at age 29. Dana Fife at IUPU-Fort Wayne was the youngest at age 30.
Tied at 12 with 8:37 left in the first half, the Falcons (4-3) then outscored the Rams 22-6, holding Fordham scoreless for the final 5:32 of the half to lead 34-18 at the break.
Bowling Green, which won its third straight game, led by as many as 26 in the second half.
The Falcons shot 51 percent from the field for the game (26-for-51) while Fordham shot a season-low 23.8 percent (15-for-63).
Chris Gaston recorded his fourth straight double-double for the Rams with 21 points and 13 rebounds. He also had five blocks.
Purdue 101, Buffalo 65
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue Boilermakers offered a frightening example of what they can do when they shoot well.
Purdue made 11 of 16 3-pointers in the second half, and the No. 4 Boilermakers pulled away for a 101-65 win over Buffalo on Saturday.
Chris Kramer and E'Twaun Moore each scored 14 points, JaJuan Johnson scored 12 points and Robbie Hummel added 11 for Purdue (7-0).
Purdue entered the game unbeaten despite having shot 38 percent from the field in its first six games, and the Boilermakers hadn't shot better than 46 percent in a game this season. The Boilermakers primarily attacked the basket in the first half, then went to the perimeter in the second.
Both approaches worked, as Purdue shot 52 percent overall against the Bulls.
"I think it was just great to get layups and easy buckets in the first half," Kramer said. "The second half, you saw just how we can shoot the ball."
Even Hummel, who had been struggling with his outside shot this season, made a 3-pointer in the second half and ran downcourt with a big smile on his face. The career 39 percent 3-point shooter had made just 22 percent so far this season.
It was the second-highest point total for a Purdue team in five seasons under Painter, and the second time since the start of the 1999-2000 season that the Boilermakers reached the century mark. Purdue had last scored more than 100 points in a 102-65 win over Southeast Missouri State on Dec. 30, 2006.
The Boilermakers won their first seven games for the first time since 1993-94.
"It's satisfaction of having success and getting better," Purdue coach Matt Painter said. "It's not one of our goals to go 7-0. We go to the next game. That's what you have to do. As a coach, it's your job to keep your players on edge."
Painter never doubted that the Boilermakers would break out of their 3-point shooting slump.
"Once you can hit a couple, you can loosen up," he said. "We have a lot of guys who can shoot the basketball."
Painter liked the way his team responded after its win over Wake Forest on Tuesday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
"I felt that our guys were really ready to play," Painter said.
Rodney Pierce led Buffalo (3-3) with 22 points and Calvin Betts added 14.
Purdue made six 3s in the first 10 minutes of the second half to help stretch the 19-point halftime lead to 40.
Seven different Purdue players made at least one 3-pointer. Painter cleared the bench with about five minutes to play. John Hart put Purdue over the 100-point mark with a 3-pointer with 2:17 to play.
Buffalo took a 15-14 lead before the Boilermakers responded with a 15-2 run. A powerful two-handed alley-oop dunk by Johnson on an assist from Keaton Grant and the free throw after the foul gave the Boilermakers a 30-17 lead.
Purdue extended its lead to 45-26 at halftime. The Boilermakers shot 50 percent from the field, and Kramer led the way with 10 points on 5-for-5 shooting.
Kramer, better known for his defense, was aggressive from the start. He scored six points in the first 3:20 of the game to surpass his season scoring average of 5.7.
"He did a very good job of getting us off to a good start," Kramer said. "If the defense is going to sag off, he'll take that shot. He allows us to have very good balance. He kind of just does what's needed for the team."
The Boilermakers forced 14 turnovers and held the Bulls to 34 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes.
Purdue's D.J. Byrd, Moore and Ryne Smith each made a 3-pointer in a two-minute span to turn a 59-36 lead into a 68-38 edge with 13 minutes to play. The Boilermakers led by as many as 43 points.
Kramer said Purdue has done a good job of getting shot opportunities in the first halves of games, but the Boilermakers haven't capitalized.
"I don't think we need to do anything different," he said. "We get looks early and often, we just need to knock them down."
Toledo 76, UMBC 67
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -Jake Barnett scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Toledo to a 76-67 win over winless Maryland-Baltimore County on Saturday.
Stephen Albrecht had 14 points, Jordan Dressler followed with 13 and Justin Anyijong added 11 for the Rockets (2-6).
Toledo took a 47-38 lead with 11:04 left in the second half when Larry Bastfield - who finished with seven assists - scored on a layup. The Retrievers (0-7) cut the lead to four a couple minutes later on Brian Neller's 3-pointer.
But the Rockets went on a 12-2 run over the next 4 minutes, capped by Bastfield's free throw to give them a 59-45 advantage. Dressler's two free throws with 3:27 left put Toledo ahead by 17 - its largest lead of the game.
Neller led UMBC with 15 points and Chauncey Gilliam had 13. Shawn Grant finished with 12 points, while Chris De La Rosa and Matt Spadafora each had 10.
#15 Ohio State 111, Eastern Michigan 60
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -Jon Diebler scored 21 points and No. 15 Ohio State beat Eastern Michigan 111-60 Saturday after losing star player Evan Turner, who hurt his back in an awkward fall.
The Buckeyes (7-1) scored at least 110 points for the second time in eight days, and the total against Eastern was the ninth-most in program history.
The win was tempered by the loss of Turner, one of the nation's top all-around players who came in averaging 20.6 points and 12.9 rebounds.
Turner was fouled on a dunk attempt, held onto the rim too long and landed on his back out of bounds. He lay on the floor for a couple of minutes before slowly limping to the locker room. He was later transported to the Ohio State University Medical Center for X-rays of his lower back.
Brandon Bowdry scored 24 points and Carlos Medlock 13 for Eastern (5-3).
