North Carolina State 66, Akron 45
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -Tracy Smith had 16 points and 11 rebounds as North Carolina State beat Akron 66-45 at the Glenn Wilkes Classic on Friday.

Dennis Horner also scored 16 points for the Wolfpack (2-0), who took control early and built a 43-21 halftime lead.

The Zips (0-2) got 10 points from Anthony Hitchens.

Horner had five points, including a 3, and C.J. Williams hit a pair of jumpers as N.C. State jumped out to a 17-4 lead 6 minutes into the game.

Smith had consecutive baskets to extend the Wolfpack advantage to 23-7 in the first half. Horner's second 3 of the game made it 31-12 with 7 minutes left in the half.

Smith closed out his 14-point first half on a 3-point play with 25 seconds remaining. Horner had 10 during the opening 20 minutes.

N.C. State improved to 15-2 in November over the last four seasons under coach Sidney Lowe. The Wolfpack plays Austin Peay on Saturday.

Citadel 63, Eastern Michigan 56
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -Cameron Wells scored 24 points, including 17 in the second half, to lead The Citadel to a 63-56 win over Eastern Michigan in the first round of the Hispanic College Fund Challenge at Missouri State University.

The Citadel (2-1) led through most of the game and was up 45-37 with 9:47 left before Eastern Michigan (1-1) went on a 15-5 run to take the lead at 52-50 with 4:42 remaining.

Wells then scored the last 12 of The Citadel's final 13 points for the win.

Joe Wolfinger scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for The Citadel. Zach Urbanus added 12.

Eastern Michigan finished with four players in double figures. Brandon Bowdry had 14 and Justin Dobbins scored 12. Jay Higgins and Carlos Medlock each had 10.

Eastern Michigan was hurt by 17 turnovers that led to 14 Citadel points.

No. 2 Michigan State 75, Toledo 62
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Even though No. 2 Michigan State wasn't at its best, it found a way to win easily at home.

Draymond Green had 15 points to lead a balanced attack and the Spartans kept up their home court mastery with a 75-62 victory over Toledo on Friday night.

The game was a regional matchup in the Legends Classic. The Spartans (3-0) will host Valparaiso on Sunday before heading to Atlantic City, N.J., for a date next Friday with Florida in the tournament semifinals.

The Spartans won their 42nd straight home game against a nonconference opponent, extending a streak that started after a loss to Duke on Dec. 3, 2003. Coach Tom Izzo improved to 37-0 at home in November and reached 339th victories in 15 seasons at Michigan State.

Izzo is one win shy of his mentor Jud Heathcote for the most in school history. But he wasn't happy with how his team, especially some of its big men, played against Toledo.

"It looks to me a little bit fat and sassy," said Izzo, who felt that some of his players got content and selfish rather than staying focused and disciplined against Toledo. "We've just got a lot of work to do."

Izzo was irritated with shooting, defense and rebounding. Michigan State -- usually a dominant team on the boards -- had only a 44-40 rebounding edge over Toledo.

Chris Allen had 14 points for Michigan State while Kalin Lucas scored 12. Delvon Roe had 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Durrell Summers added 10 points.

"In a big game or a not-so-big game, you've got to emphasis the same stuff, really," Summers said. "It's going to help down the road, in the [NCAA] tournament. You can't really let up on any team. And I think we kind of let up a little bit today."

Stephen Albrecht scored 20 points for Toledo (0-3), which trailed by as many as 20 in the second half.

"It's a very tough place to play," Toledo coach Gene Cross said of the Breslin Center. "And they're a hard-nosed team."

Toledo is one of the few non-Big Ten teams to beat Michigan State at Breslin Center on Izzo's watch. The Rockets defeated the Spartans 81-76 in 2002 - their last trip to East Lansing.

But the talent gap was much bigger Friday night. The quicker, bigger and more athletic Spartans opened the game with a thunderous dunk by Summers off a pass from Lucas, setting the tone for a long evening for the Rockets.

Justin Anyijong gave Toledo an 8-5 lead on a 3-pointer with 16:32 remaining in the first half. The Spartans answered with a 13-0 run, including 3-pointers from Allen and Korie Lucious.

Michigan State went deep into its bench in the first half, while the frustrated Rockets resorted to launching 3s when they couldn't crack the Spartans' aggressive defense.

Michigan State led by as many as 17 in the first half before Toledo used a 10-0 run to make it 37-30 at intermission.

The Spartans started the second half with a 8-0 run, capped by Allen's dunk, to take a 45-30 lead. Michigan State led by as many as 20 points in the second half.

Raymar Morgan, battling foot and ankle injuries, did not play but could have been available in an emergency. Morgan played through the injuries in Tuesday's win over Gonzaga but wasn't needed against the Rockets.

"We're not that good without him," Izzo said. "We need to get him back."

Louisiana Tech 74, Miami 62
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -Kyle Gibson scored 27 to lead four Louisiana Tech players in double figures Friday as the Bulldogs came away with a 74-62 victory over Miami of Ohio in the opening game of the Basketball Travelers World Vision Classic.

Julian Mavunga had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Redhawks (0-3), who didn't give him much help offensively.

Olu Ashaolu had a double-double for Louisiana Tech (2-0) with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Jamel Guyton contributed 15 points and DeAndre Brown added 10.

The Bulldogs led by as much as 62-44 with 5:40 remaining before Miami rallied to cut it to 69-62 with 1:34 left after Mayunga hit a 3-pointer. But that was as close as the Redhawks would get.

Guyton powered Louisiana Tech to a 36-26 halftime lead by scoring nine points and hitting 3 of 5 3-pointers in the first half.

Northern Illinois 85, Tennessee State 57
DE KALB, Ill. (AP) -Sean Kowal hit a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to pace Northern Illinois to an 85-57 victory over Tennessee State.

Tony Nixon added 16 points and Mike DiNunno 11 for the Huskies (1-2), and guard Darion "Jake" Anderson had a career-high 13 rebounds to go with nine points and six assists.

Jacquan Nobles led Tennessee State (0-2) with a game-high 21 points, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range. Darius Cox scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Northern Illinois blew out to a 47-28 halftime advantage in its home opener. The Huskies held a decisive shooting edge over the Tigers 54.4 percent to 35.0 and outrebounded them 47-32.

The Huskies were coming off Tuesday's 80-61 loss at Illinois in the first meeting between those two schools.

Iowa 68, Bowling Green 46
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -The struggling Iowa Hawkeyes found their touch Friday night and defeated Bowling Green 68-46 in a non-conference game.

The Hawkeyes (1-2) had shot only 32.7 percent from the field and 20.4 percent on 3-pointers while dropping their first two games for the first time since the 1970-71 campaign.

But they shot much better against the Falcons (1-2). Iowa hit 12 of 25 3-pointers for 48.0 percent and shot 47.1 percent overall for the game.

Freshman Eric May drilled four 3-pointers and led a balanced attack with 16 points. Matt Gatens added 14 points and Anthony Tucker 13. Marc Larson led Bowling Green with 12 points.

The Hawkeyes were in danger of starting a season 0-3 for the first time in 90 years, but they righted the ship against Bowling Green. Iowa missed seven of its first eight shots but used a 10-0 run to quickly take control.
