Central Michigan 67, Illinois-Chicago 48
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) -Robbie Harman scored 20 points, mostly on 3-point shots, as Central Michigan cruised past Illinois-Chicago 67-48 Tuesday night.
Harman made six of his 10 3-three point attempts as the Chippewas (2-1) made 12 overall compared to eight for the visiting Flames (1-1). Jalin Thomas scored 16 and Jordan Bitzer scored 12 on 4-for-4 shooting from behind the arc. Chris Kellerman had 12 rebounds for Central Michigan.
The Chippewas shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, building a 39-22 lead at the break. They cooled off to finish at 42 percent but had the game well in hand.
Robo Kreps had 15 points but was the only Illinois-Chicago player in double figures. The Flames, who never led, shot 27 percent from the field.
Western Michigan 83, Virginia Commonwealth 67
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) -Martelle McLemore had a game-high 22 points and David Kool had 17 as Western Michigan rallied to beat Virginia Commonwealth 83-67 Wednesday night.
McLemore and Kool each added nine rebounds to contribute to the Broncos' 52-37 rebound advantage. Donald Lawson had 13 points and 11 rebounds for Western Michigan (1-1).
Bradford Burgess led Virginia Commonwealth (1-1) with 16 points. Brandon Rozell had 12 points and Jay Gavin added 10 for the Rams.
Virginia Commonwealth led 42-35 at halftime but struggled to score in the second half. The Broncos took the lead during an 11-0 run midway through the period.
Western Michigan outshot the Virginia Commonwealth 46.6 percent (27 of 58) to 30.7 percent (23 of 75).
Kent State 70, Youngstown State 61
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Behind a second half defensive stand, the Kent State men's basketball team picked up a 70-61 win at Youngstown State in their first road game of the season. The victory improves the Golden Flashes to 3-1 on the year; the Penguins fell to 1-2.
Kent State had four players in double figures for a second straight game led by 18 points from senior Tyree Evans (Richmond, Va. / Motlow C.C. [Tenn]) who shot 7-10 from the field and had four rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Justin Greene (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lincoln) added 17 points and redshirt junior Rodriguez Sherman (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) chipped in 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Senior Anthony Simpson (Rockford, Ill. / Highland C.C.) led the team with six rebounds in addition to his 12 points.
Kent State jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, but Youngstown State would mount a comeback. An 8-1 stretch by the Penguins allowed them to take an 18-17 lead at the 8:03 mark, but the advantage would not last long. On the Golden Flashes next trip down the court, Evans hit a three from the right corner to quickly put KSU back on top. Sherman followed with a three of his own and put Kent State back up by five (23-18). This cushion would remain for the Golden Flashes as they took a 30-24 lead into halftime.
Greene helped lead the offense in the second half, scoring the first four points for KSU, but both he and senior center Brandon Parks (Bunker Hill, Ind. / Maconaquah) would get in foul trouble early in the stanza as YSU staged another comeback. The Penguins would tie the game at 36 with 14:23 remaining, setting up a back-and-forth game over the next three minutes.
As he did in the first half, Evans answered with another big three, one of his four in the game, to set off a 13-0 run for Kent State. With the defense holding Youngstown State without a field goal for over eight minutes, the Golden Flashes would work their way to the victory.
Sherman would but the finishing touches on the game with a steal and breakaway dunk in the final 30 seconds.
After making just 2-6 from the foul line in the first half, Kent State helped control the game in the second hitting on 19-24, including make on their first nine attempts.
The Golden Flashes return to the court on Sunday when they welcome Rochester (Mich.) to the M.A.C. Center as part of the final game of The Hispanic College Fund Classic. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
Cincinnati 92, Toledo 68
CINCINNATI (AP) -Rashad Bishop scored a career-high 20 points Wednesday night and Cincinnati had more defensive lapses before pulling away to a 92-68 victory over Toledo.
The Bearcats (2-0) have given up a lot of open shots in both of their wins. Toledo (1-1) is one of the nation's youngest teams, starting three freshmen and a sophomore, but pulled within 57-49 with 14 minutes to go by making seven of eight shots.
Cincinnati opened the game with a 17-3 run, but let the Rockets stay close with soft defense. Toledo shot 48 percent from the field and was led by Jake Barnett's 21 points.
After scoring only five points on 2-of-10 shooting in his collegiate debut, Cincinnati freshman Lance Stephenson was smoother. The prep star from Brooklyn scored 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting.
