The Mid-American Conference announced its 2009 volleyball All-MAC teams, as well as its Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Setter of the Year and Coach of the Year on Thursday, as voted by the league's head coaches.
Capturing this year's Player of the Year unanimously for the second year in a row was Ohio's Ellen Herman. Herman was a vital part of an extremely potent Ohio offense that leads the league in hitting percentage and total kills. She is atop the league in kills with 436, averaging an impressive 4.69 per game. She also leads the league in points with 488.5, averaging 5.25 per game. She has excelled in all facets of the game, as she also adds 33 assists and 22 service aces.
Joining his player was Ohio coach Ryan Theis who was voted Coach of the Year by his peers. Theis has powered the Bobcats (23-5, 15-1 MAC) to yet another MAC regular season title, amassing a 28-4 league mark over his first two seasons in Athens. Under his watch this season, Ohio led the MAC in hitting percentage, opponent hitting percentage, assists, kills, blocks, match won-lost percentage, hitting percentage by opponents, kills by opponents, assists by opponents, aces by opponents, blocks by opponents and digs by opponents. Under Theis, the Bobcats are 42-3 when hitting .200 or better, and 34-4 when holding opponents under the .200 mark.
Western Michigan's Jillian Mitchell was named Setter of the Year for the second season in a row. Mitchell led WMU to second in the MAC in kills (13.68) and assists (12.70) in conference play with the third-best attack percentage (.232). Mitchell averaged 11.09 assists per set in conference play and 10.47 assists per set in all matches, which ranks among the top-65 in the country. Mitchell is only the second Bronco setter to earn two First Team All-MAC recognitions (Heather Sawyer-1982-85).
Claiming Freshman of the Year honors was WMU's Jessica Brown. The middle blocker is the fourth MAC Freshman of the Year in school history and the first since Melissa Hansen in 1993. Brown ranks eighth in the MAC in attack percentage (.294) in all matches and eighth in the MAC in blocks (0.92) in conference matches. Overall, Brown was second on the team with 352 kills (2.84) and led the team with 96 blocks (0.77).
Northern Illinois's Maddie Hughes was named Defensive Player of the year to round out the specialty awards. Hughes because the first Huskie to win this honor. Hughes led the MAC in digs during the regular season, as she totaled 5.01 per set (526) and had double-figure digs in all but two matches. She totaled 30 or more digs twice this season, setting a new career-high with 34 against Western Michigan on Oct. 31, and had 20 or more digs 11 times. She currently ranks second to Gina Guide (2,249) at NIU in career digs with 1,620.
Joining Herman and Mitchell on the first team All-MAC were teammates Meghan Simons, Sue Jacobi, Michelle Jantsch of Ohio and Allyson Doyle of Western Michigan. Kelsey Brandl, Ball State, Shari Luther, Bowling Green, Lauren Krupsky, Central Michigan, Arjula Prenga, Kent State, Andrea Atteberry, Miami and Meagan Schoenrock, Northern Illinois round out the first team.
Joining Brown on the second team All-MAC was teammate Michelle Moore. Miami received three honorees including Michele Metzler, Hallie Hanks and Megan Griffin. Toledo and Northern Illinois followed with two each with Maddie Hughes and Allison McGlaughlin, NIU and Kassie Kadera and Amber DeWeerdt, Toledo. Rounding out the second team is Brionna Patterson, Akron, Kaitlyn Schultz, Central Michigan and Liva Brivule, Kent State.
