Women's Track and Co-Field Athletes of the Week Announced

Becky Horn of Western Michigan snatches Track Athlete of the Week, while Stevi Large of Akron and Lashonda Davis of Miami share Field Athlete of the Week honors.

WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

 

BECKY HORN

Western Michigan

Jr. • Battle Creek, Mich. (Central)

Becky Horn broke the WMU 800 meter record on her way to first place at the Sykes Sabock Challenge Cup. Hitting a provisional mark, she was just a hair off a earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Horn’s finish of 2:05.90 was just four tenths of a second off an automatic bid. It was the eighth fastest time recorded in the nation this year. Horn’s time broke Bronco All-American Jill Stamison’s record of 2:06.32, set in 1993. The time also set a Penn State Horace Ashenfelter III Track record. In addition to her recording breaking 800 meter performance, Horn helped the WMU 4x400 relay team set an NCAA provisional mark, as the team finished in 3:39.96.

 

 

OTHER NOMINEES:

Rachel Zubricky

Sr. • Akron • Lakewood, Ohio (Lakewood)

Turned in the fastest mile time in the MAC this indoor season (4:53.50) at Penn State’s Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup. Placed third in the event, which had 29 contestants, and six seconds ahead of fourth.

 

Jessica White

Sr. • Bowling Green • Youngstown, Ohio (Liberty)

Jessica White had two huge performances this past Saturday in the 60-meter dash as well as the 200-meter dash. First in the 60-meter dash she finished second behind Miami's Lashonda Davis but broke her own school record. She finished the dash in a time of 7.51 seconds, .02 seconds faster than her previous school record she set last indoor season. She was also the All-Ohio Champion in the 200-meter dash, running a season best time of 24.85 seconds, only .02 seconds slower than her personal best in the event.

 

Mary Veith

So. • Buffalo • Derby, N.Y. (Lakeshore)

Veith set a new personal best in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:50.77. Her time qualifies her for the ECAC Championships and improved her personal best by 18 seconds.

 

Najah Floyd

Sr. • Central Michigan • Southfield, Mich. (Denby)

Floyd smashed Central Michigan's school record in the 400-meter dash, lowering it by more than a second in a time of 54.65 to finish fifth overall in that event at the prestigious Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup at Penn State last weekend. She also ran a strong race in the 200-meter dash, cutting more than a half second off her previous best time this season with a mark of 24.45. She finished eighth in the 200, and her two scoring finishes helped CMU to a seventh place team standing, ahead of MAC rivals Western Michigan, Buffalo and Kent State.

 

Andrea Wheeler

Jr. • Eastern Michigan • Suffolk, Va. (Lakeland)

At the Eastern Michigan Classic, Wheeler finished first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.82.

 

Lashonda Davis

Sr. • Miami • Kokomo, Ind. (Kokomo)

Davis became Miami's all-time track and field scoring leader Saturday at the All-Ohio Championships, as she placed first in the 60-meter dash. Davis clocked in at 7.63 in the preliminary heat and blazed to a first-place time of 7.46 in the finals, just two-hundredths of a second off an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

 

Carolyn Vasquez

So. • Northern Illinois • Arlington Heights, Ill. (Hersey)

This past weekend, Vasquez placed second in her heat and eighth overall in the 600-yard run at the highly competitive Iowa State Classic with a time of 1:26.90.

 

Carime Reinhart

Jr. • Ohio • Bascom, Ohio (Hopewell-Loudon)

At the All-Ohio Championships last weekend, Reinhart placed second in the 5000-meter run. Reinhart recorded her second-place finish with a time of 17:42.58.

 

 

 

WOMEN’S CO-FIELD ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

 

STEVI LARGE

Akron

Sophomore • Somerset, Ohio (Sheridan)

Set both a Mid-American Conference and Akron record by winning the weight throw at Penn State’s Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup with a toss of 65’11.75”, beating the previous MAC record of 63’00.25” set by Lauren Collins of Miami in 2004. Her throw ranks among the nation’s top five. Also placed fourth in the shot put at the meet with an effort of 15.24 (50-0).

 

LASHONDA DAVIS

Miami

Senior • Kokomo, Ind. (Kokomo)

Davis became Miami's all-time track and field scoring leader Saturday at the All-Ohio Championships, as she placed first in the long jump. Davis finished with a first-place distance of 19-5 1/4, winning her third long jump event of the season and taking the competition by more than a foot. With the victory, Davis moved ahead of Lauren Collins, the 2003 MAC Athlete of the Year, who had previously occupied the top spot as Miami's scoring leader with 781 career points, helping Miami win the All-Ohio Championship over Big East foe Cincinnati. It was the third time this season Davis has captured a double-double in winning the 60 meters and long jump competitions.

 

OTHER NOMINEES:

 

Takarra Dunning

So. • Bowling Green • Kalamazoo, Mich. (Central)

Going into her final throw of the night, Dunning was already winning the event, granted by only a centimeter. This wasn't good enough so Dunning threw over three and a half feet farther than her previous personal best. Throwing 49’10.50”, she easily won the event and has provisionally qualified for Nationals. She beat her nearest competitor by over three feet. This mark not only eclipses her indoor personal best but her outdoor personal best.

 

Fatimah Hill

So. • Buffalo • Lyndonville, N.Y. (Lyndonville)

Hill placed second overall in the women’s long jump competition with a new school record and personal best of 19-4.  Her jumped improved her previous best by over 8 inches and also qualified her for the ECAC Championships.

 

Jackie Smart

Sr. • Central Michigan • Chicago, Ill. (Thornton Township)

Smart won the triple jump at the prestigious Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup at Penn State, leaping 42’1.25” for her fifth win in the triple jump this season. She added a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 18’11.75”, and her two point-scoring finishes propelled CMU to a seventh place team finish at the Sykes-Sabock meet ahead of three of the four other MAC schools at the meet.

 

Janice Keppler

So. • Eastern Michigan • Medina, N.Y. (Medina)

Keppler placed first in the pole vault with a leap of 12’7.5”. It is her third victory in five weeks.

 

Ashley Morrow

Sr. • Northern Illinois • O’Fallon, Ill. (O’Fallon)

Morrow finished the weekend with a 19th place finish in the weight throw with a distance of 56’1.75”. She also finished 21st in the shot put with a toss of 46’2.0”. Both events had over 60 athletes competing, placing her in the top third of all competitors.

 

Bahiyjaui Allen

Fr. • Ohio • Toledo, Ohio (Sylvania Southview)

At the All-Ohio Championships last weekend, freshman Bahiyjaui Allen earned a third place and 17th place finish in the field events. Allen took third in the shot put by throwing 13.82 meters and she also took 17th in the weight throw with a throw of 12.90 meters.

Kristalyn Mauch

Sr. • Western Michigan • Saginaw, Mich. (Heritage)

Mauch broke her own school record in the shot put at the Sykes Sabock Challenge Cup, establishing a new mark of 49’3.50”. She placed sixth in both throwing events, also recording a toss of 58-05.75 in the weight throw.
