CMU mentor Brian Kelly led Grand Valley State University to five GLIAC Championships (1992, 97, 98, 01 and 02) and NCAA Division II championships in 2002 and 2003, compiling an overall record of 28-1 those two seasons.
MAC Quick Notes
Four Will Play: Four MAC teams have been slotted into bowl, the second highest total in league history behind the five MAC bowl teams in 2004. In order, Northern Illinois will play TCU Dec. 19 in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl; Central Michigan will face an opponent to be named Dec. 26 in the Motor City Bowl in Detroit; Western Michigan will take on an opponent from the Big East Jan. 6 in the first-ever International Bowl in Toronto; and Ohio will play an opponent from Conference USA Jan. 7 in the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala.
Three Straight: Northern Illinois Garrett Wolfe (158.3 ypg) has wrapped up his third consecutive MAC rushing title. He joins Miami’s Travis Prentice (1997-99) and Western Michigan’s Jerome Persell (1976-78) in that select category. Wolfe will also become the first player in MAC history to lead the league three consecutive seasons in all-purpose yardage (178.9 ypg). With 5,136 yards, Wolfe joined Prentice (5,596) as the only players in MAC history to rush for 5,000 yards.
Closing In On A Record: Western Michigan’s Ameer Ismail set a MAC sack record with 17 . He nailed the record in the season finale at Akron with two sacks, eclipsing the former standard of 16 held by Dan Bazuin (Central Michigan, 2005) and Jonathan Goddard (Marshall, 2004).
