Ohio State 91, Bowling Green 72
COLUMBUS, Ohio (BGSU Athletic Communications) -- Led by All-American Jantel Lavender, the third-ranked Ohio State University opened up a large halftime lead en route to a 91-72 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Sunday afternoon (Nov. 15). The game, a quarterfinal-round contest in the Preseason WNIT, was held at Value City Arena.

With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 2-0 on the young season, and advance to the 16-team tournament's semifinal round. The Falcons, now 1-1 on the year, will play a third game in the tourney, with date, time and opponent to be determined.

Lavender scored 18 of her game-high 23 points in the first half, helping the Buckeyes open up a 55-28 lead at the intermission. The Brown and Orange outscored the home team by a 44-36 margin in the second half, but never could cut OSU's lead below 17 points.

Lavender, who averaged a double-double last season, had a game-high 14 rebounds on Sunday for her second double-double in as many games this year. She paced four double-digit scorers for the Scarlet and Gray, with Tayler Hill adding 19 points, Samantha Prahalis 16 and Sarah Schulze 15.

Junior Tracy Pontius led the Brown and Orange with 18 points, while classmate Lauren Prochaska added 11 points along with a team-leading eight rebounds. Another junior, Jen Uhl, added nine points off the bench.

The Falcons trailed by just seven points after Uhl sandwiched a three-point play around the eight-minute media timeout in the first half. Coming out of that break, her free throw cut OSU's lead to 27-20 with 7:21 on the clock.

But, the Buckeyes then held the Falcons scoreless for the next four-and-a-half minutes, scoring 14 unanswered points in that span. Hill capped that run with a free throw that gave the home team a 41-20 advantage with just under three minutes left in the half.

BGSU's final WNIT opponent will not be determined until after the completion of all four quarterfinal-round games. Three of those games were held on Sunday, but the fourth -- Marist at West Virginia -- will be played Monday night (Nov. 16).

More information on BGSU's game in Columbus will be available at BGSUFalcons.com late Sunday night.

Toledo 72, Cleveland State 62
TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (1-1) utilized a 22-8 run midway through the second half and claimed its first win of the season, defeating Cleveland State, 72-62, on Sunday. The non-conference contest was played before 2,419 fans at Savage Arena.

"Cleveland State tried to pack it in defensively to counter our height, but I thought our kids did a good job of adjusting and our spacing was so much better in the second half," Toledo Head Coach Tricia Cullop said. "We had more time to get off shots as a result of that and our shooting percentage went up."

Senior Allie Clifton led four Rockets in double figures with 22 points, followed by sophomore Naama Shafir (15 pts.), junior Jessica Williams (12 pts.) and senior Tanika Mays (12 pts.). Mays also topped the 1,000-point barrier in the 10-point victory.

"Getting to 1,000 career points is a great milestone in my career," said Mays, who also finished with six rebounds, game-high five assists and two steals. "I think I have worked hard on my game and this is my reward. At the same time, though, I have to thank my teammates, because I couldn't do it alone."

The Rockets shot 42.6 percent (26-of-61) the field, including an impressive 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from three-point land, and 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the free-throw line to rebound from Friday's season-opening loss to Northwestern.

Trailing 33-32 at the 13:52 mark of the second half, UT sophomore Courtney Ingersoll hit a triple to start the game-changing run. Moments later, Shafir knocked down back-to-back treys, before Ingersoll finished off the run with another three-point field goal to establish a 15-point bulge, 54-39, at 7:54. A season ago, the most triples UT hit in a single game was nine.

"I was very proud of our team for being able to adapt quickly to something that was a little different from what I normally ask them to do," Cullop said. "We had a lot of different people step up tonight and be threats. It was all good to see that."

In the early going, the Midnight Blue & Gold found some success inside and three-consecutive layups from Shafir, Clifton and Mays gave them a 10-4 lead at 11:47.

The Rockets maintained a comfortable cushion as the opening half wore on and back-to-back triples from Williams and Clifton made the score 18-11 with 7:10 remaining. UT's effort was aided by CSU's poor shooting, as the visitors misfired on 15 of their initial 20 field goal attempts.

Unfortunately for UT, they were not able to further extend its lead and settled for a 23-19 advantage into the intermission. Toledo shot 33.3 percent (10-of-33) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, compared to Cleveland State at 24.1 percent (7-of-29).

"I thought we were in a chicken fight in that first half," Cullop said. "We just couldn't find a way to pull away."

Toledo's Williams and Clifton hit a pair of treys to begin the second period to make the score 30-23 at 17:45.

The Vikings quickly responded with a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to take their only lead of the game, 33-32, before the Rockets' game-changing run. CSU's burst was spearheaded by back-to-back triples from Jessica Roque and Kailey Klein.

"I thought our energy level in the second half was a lot better than the first, and I thought that helped us," Mays said.
Klein led the Vikings with 19 points and Roque had 14 in a losing effort.

The Rockets return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 18 when they travel to Rochester, MI to battle Oakland. Tip-off will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Athletics Center O'Rena.

Arizona 91, Miami 67
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Miami RedHawks fell to Arizona 91-67 Sunday afternoon in the finale of the Iona Tip-Off Classic. Miami is now 1-1 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 2-0.

Freshman point guard Courtney Osborn had a breakout game for the RedHawks, scoring 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 4-for-5 on three-point baskets. After the conclusion of the tournament, she and senior forward Ashleigh Brown were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The story of the first half was Arizona's hot shooting. The Wildcats quickly jumped to a 14-8 lead on a pair of three-pointers. With the score 24-12, Osborn answered with a three-pointer of her own to get the lead back into single digits. Maggie Boyer hit back-to-back layups to keep the RedHawks within 10 at 36-26 with 4:09 remaining in the half, but Arizona's shooting took off again from there as it closed on a 14-4 run to take a 50-30 lead into the break.

The Wildcats shot .563 for the half (18-for-32), compared to Miami which was at 28.1 percent (9-for-32). Boyer was the team's leading scorer with nine points in the first period.

After a slow start to begin the second half saw Miami fall behind further at 66-37, Osborn helped push the RedHawks a little closer with two three-pointers and a driving layup. With the Wildcats up 80-53, a 10-2 run by Miami reduced the deficit to 19 points at 82-63, but that was as close as the RedHawks would get as their shooting went cold and they fell, 91-67.

In addition to Osborn's 22, Boyer finished with 10 points. Arizona outrebounded Miami 55-29, and was led by Ify Ibekwe, who had 16 points and 15 rebounds.

Miami returns to action next Saturday with its home opener against Wake Forest at 2 p.m.

St. Bonaventure 67, Akron 37
St. Bonaventure, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure hit five second-half 3-pointers and began the second period on an 11-0 run to defeated the Akron Zips, 67-37, Sunday afternoon at SBU's Reilly Center.

The Bonnies' Dana Mitchell did most of the damage during the run and she finished with a game-high 16 points. She was joined in double figures by Megan Van Tatenhove and Amelia Horton, each with 11.

Akron got a pair of free throws from Rachel Tecca and a 3-pointer from Katie Bubna to cut the UA deficit to 19 before the Bonnies hit three treys to pull away for the win.

The Zips were led in scoring by Kara Murphy and Tecca, each with six.

St. Bonaventure grabbed the early lead and never relinquished it. However, the Zips kept in striking distance over the first 20 minutes despite 12 first-half turnovers. Akron did hold the Bonnies scoreless over the final 1:56 and trimmed a 13-point deficit to seven, 27-20, at the break, thanks to a well-executed play, resulting in a Jolene Tamboue layup, as time expired in the first period.

St. Bonaventure shot 51 percent from the floor, while holding the Zips to 30.7 percent shooting.

The Zips remain on the road, facing Robert Morris this Thursday (Nov. 19).
