MAC Announces Gymnast and Specialist of the Week

MAC Gymnast of the Week
Kristin Teubner, Central Michigan
Senior, Denver, Colo. / Grandview HS

Senior Kristin Teubner had her best all-around performance of the season Friday, scoring a 39.275 to take first place at the Illinois/Michigan Challenge. Teubner stole the show inside Bowen Field House, claiming first-place finishes on the balance beam and floor with season-high scores of 9.850 and 9.825 while finishing second on the vault with a 9.850. She also finished tied for fourth in the uneven bars, scoring a 9.750. The reigning MAC Co-Gymnast of the Year has posted the second-best all-around score in the MAC this season with her 39.275 mark, just .025 off teammate Brittany Petzold’s clip a week ago. 


MAC Specialist of the Week
Caroline O’Brien, Western Michigan
Junior, Loveland, Ohio  / Loveland

Caroline O’Brien had a first-place and runner-up finish, helping Western Michigan defeat UIC Sunday, 193.825 to 193.425 … with the win, WMU improved to 5-0 on the season, which is the best start for the Broncos since the program opened the 1988 season with six wins … O’Brien won the uneven bars with a 9.825 and then placed second on balance beam with a 9.775.

Taylor Zondervan, Western Michigan
Senior, Schoolcraft, Mich. / University of Michigan / Schoolcraft

Taylor Zondervan won the floor exercise (9.825), finished third on uneven bars (9.800) and captured the all-around title (38.775), helping Western Michigan come from behind to defeat UIC Sunday, 193.825 to 193.425 … with the win, WMU improved to 5-0 on the season, which is the best start for the Broncos since the program opened the 1988 season with six wins … WMU trailed UIC heading into the final rotation and Zondervan served as the Broncos’ anchor on floor, sealing the win with a meet-best 9.825 … she also totaled a 9.625 on vault, 9.800 on bars and 9.525 on beam … all four of her event scores counted towards the team total.

Shonda Clore, Northern Illinois 
Senior, Grand Rapids, MI /Northview

Shonda Clore earned her season-best scores on vault and balance beam and notched top four finishes on each of her three events to help lead NIU to a come-from-behind victory over Ball State Saturday at the NIU Convocation Center.  Clore was the Huskies’ highest finisher on vault in the meet with a 9.725. Her bars routine helped start the NIU comeback as she went up on bars after NIU’s three previous gymnasts had fallen but turned the Huskies’ fortunes around with a 9.750.  She continued the momentum as the leadoff gymnast on balance beam and took fourth place with a 9.650, to score .750 above her previous season best on the event.    

Jamilah Ali, Bowling Green
Freshman, Toms River, NJ / Manchester

In a meet that featured Maryland and North Carolina, freshman Jamilah Ali arguably had her best performance of the season, finishing first on beam (9.825), fourth on vault (9.825) and 14th on floor (9.600). She matched her career-best on both the beam and vault.

Jamie Radermacher, Eastern Michigan University
Freshman, Tualatin, Or. / Tualatin

Freshman Jamie Radermacher (Tualatin, Or.-Tualatin) helped Eastern Michigan University to a fourth place finish Feb. 3, at the annual Michigan-Illinois Challenge. Radermacher notched three career high scores in the competition. The young Eagle recorded a seventh place performance earning a 9.775 to lead Eastern on the vault. The Tualatin, Oregon native also posted solid scores on the balance beam and floor exercise tallying a 9.025 and 9.550, respectively.

Ashley Guerra, Northern Illinois
Senior, Orland Park, IL /Carl Sandburg

NIU senior Ashley Guerra put together another good day to help Northern Illinois to a comeback victory over Ball State Saturday at the NIU Convocation Center.  In the anchor spot for Northern Illinois on uneven parallel bars, Guerra posted a 9.775 to tie for second place. Her performance, coming right after that of Shonda Clore, helped the Huskies avoid a disastrous bars outing after three falls.  Guerra’s 9.675 on balance beam took third place in the meet as she tied her season-best beam score.  Northern Illinois posted its best team score of the year on balance beam en route to a 192.925 overall total.   

Monica Eaton, Bowling Green
Junior, Kearney, Mo. / Kearney

In her only event, Monica Eaton finished fourth on the uneven bars with a a 9.700 in a meet that featured Maryland and North Carolina.

Meaghan McWhorter, Central Michigan
Sophomore/Junior, Grand Ledge, Mich. (Grand Ledge HS

Hampered by a leg injury all week, sophomore Meaghan McWhorter was a late addition to the CMU vault lineup Friday and came through in grand fashion. The sophomore anchored the CMU lineup, sticking her vault to score a season-best 9.800 to take third place in the Illinois/Michigan Challenge. 

Stacie Wood, Eastern Michigan University
Senior, Brantford, Ont. / Brantford Collegiate Institute

Senior Stacie Wood (Brantford, Ont.-Brantford Collegiate Institute) had a strong showing Feb. 3, leading Eastern Michigan University to a fourth place finish at the annual Michigan-Illinois Challenge. The Brantford, Ontario native led the Eagles on the floor exercise recording a 9.725 earning her a fifth place finish to help EMU to a 47.875 team floor score. Wood also tallied a 9.650 on the uneven parallel bars to guide the Green and White to a 48.225 team score.
